Ali Harbi Ali is a 25-year-old British citizen of Somali heritage who was arrested by the British police under anti-terrorism laws following the killing of British politician David Amess.

He is son of Harbi Ali Kullane – an ex-media adviser to a former prime minister of Somalia, and he has been referred to the national counter-terrorist Prevent scheme a few years ago.

Former friends of the suspected killer said he reportedly watched videos on YouTube of hate preacher Anjem Choudary, who was jailed for five years and six months in 2016 after being deemed to have invited support of the Islamic State.

According to the ex-school friends, Ali had become obsessed with the videos. It is thought Ali became radicalised online recently.

The neighbour claimed Ali was an ex-health service worker, saying he is from a lovely family.

Also, a neighbour described the suspect as a “normal boy” and said they were shocked to see him linked to the killing.

It is being claimed that Ali booked an appointment to see Sir David at Belfairs Methodist Church in Essex a week before the fatal attack.
