Al-Qaeda and Isis are still major threat to Britain’s Jews, warn security experts

Britain’s main Jewish security organisation has said that Al-Qaeda and Isis continue to pose a “serious” threat to the community.

The statement by the Community Security Trust (CST) comes as the government prepares to warn that the terror groups are plotting atrocities in the UK.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman will today release an update to the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy in which she will say that of all the forms of terrorism, potential attacks by Islamists pose the biggest threat to UK citizens.

Braverman will warn that while “Islamist terrorism remains the predominant threat, terrorism is becoming increasingly unpredictable, making cases harder to detect and investigate”, according to the Telegraph.
The Home Secretary will reportedly also say that Islamist plots account for three quarters of Mi5’s time.

CST said in a statement: “The revelation by the home secretary that Al-Qaeda and Islamic State are both continuing to plot attacks in the UK should surprise nobody.

“These are vicious terrorist organisations with a long and deadly record that continue to pose a serious threat, both to the Jewish community and to wider society.

“The sheer number of cases being investigated by police, and the number of plots they and the security services manage to foil, give an indication of the scale of the challenge these terrorist groups pose. The need for all of us to remain vigilant is clear.”

The police has confirmed there are around 800 live counter-terrorism policing investigations taking place in the UK, and last year 169 arrests were made for terror-related offences.
