Driver who ploughed into pedestrians in Times Square is 26-year-old with two previous arrests for drunk driving

A car has rammed into pedestrians in New York City’s busy Times Square, with one person dead and up to 20 injured.

Witnesses claimed a maroon sedan drove at pedestrians, knocking them over in the busy tourist hub at the intersection of 45th street and Broadway.

Witnesses said the vehicle drove against traffic and on to the sidewalk about noon after entering the district at 42nd Street before driving north.

The New York Fire Department confirmed one person had died and 19 people were injured.

Authorities have described the incident as “isolated” and not terrorism-related.
